We decided to work on the authentication of old paintings. Our problematic is “How is it possible to authenticate an old painting?” and deals with the topic “Material, a support of information”. Indeed, we sought to prove that a painting can give information about its painter and its period.
Working on the art was an idea among others, like candies or fragrances, but above all we wanted to do our TPE on a subject we liked. Moreover, this topic permits us to find roots in the two fields, Physics/Chemistry and English. That is to say, the English part is about Sisley: we agreed to test the authenticity of an artwork of Sisley, who was a famous impressionist English painter, and the different technics of authentication, that we introduced in our production, are the physical/chemical part. Furthermore, our sources of information were already founded.
Our families were already in contact with painting professionals, and they were able to help us in the plan development, to give us some advices or equipment for the experiments. Indeed, we have the opportunity to analyse with the necked eye a reproduction of the painting “Jeunes filles au piano” of Renoir, which have been done by one of our relatives, during the oral representation. Thus it has been possible to think on a copy and not only on an original artwork, as we have done for the production, helped by the web-site called “Painting Authenticity”.
Our production is a little film called “A surprising discovery in the attic of Grace”. We choose to make a film because we wanted to do something really distinctive. Moreover it is a production method that we enjoy and we concluded that it matches with our problematic and our plan. Acted in the film was something relatively new for everyone and we had fun to learn how it is in front of the camera. The production of voiceovers was more difficult and laborious, but it learnt to us how it is important to evacuate the stress before taking the floor.
I also learnt the significance of the teamwork, its advantages and its disadvantages. In fact, at the beginning we had difficulties with the repartition of the roles, but we quickly found how to work. The conception of fake cracks has also been a problem on the first time. We tried it about twenty times but it didn’t work. One day I took the medium and I applied an advice of my mother and it works. I was really happy to find a solution of this mechanical issue for the oral representation.
In a nutshell, our TPE learnt me more about the authentication of old paintings and about the development of a group project.
Here it is ù-ù (ASHA il faut changer ce spoiler dis-moi O_O)
